Reception for the Alfred Kastler Biology Prize 2013 chaired by Mr Louis SCHWEITZER,

President of the LFDA

A training to surgical technique,

" Without animal suffering and pain "

The Foundation animal, ethical right and sciences (LFDA) awarded its Alfred Kastler Biology Prize 2013 to Doctor Catherine VOGT, Veterinarian, Research Engineer at the University Claude Bernard Lyon I. The prize-winner received it during a reception organised by the Foundation LFDA to the Senate on December 17th, 2013. The Alfred KASTLER Prize of biology was established in 1984 to the memory of Professor Alfred KASTLER, Nobel prize, member of the Institute, the co-founder of the LFDA and his president from 1979 till 1984. It is intended to encourage the research and the application of the methods avoiding the traumatising experimental use of the animal. It is opened to every researcher or teacher, biologist, doctor, pharmacist, veterinarian or agronomist, French or of French expression. Private donations individuals collected by the Foundation LFDA exclusively finance the prize.

The jury of the Prize 2013, chaired by Pr Alain COLLENOT (veterinarian, biologist of the development, LFDA administrator) combined nine biologists, among whom the former two prize-winners. They chose to award the Alfred KASTLER Prize 2013 to Catherine VOGT to have finalized and implemented a training in surgical technique, applied to the experiment, without use of live animal. The jury rewarded the ethical concern of the candidate to refuse to impose on the animals, sufferings, pains or damage which is possible to avoid by using models of replacement.
